Ability to filter records by dimension in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central

Dimensions are additional attributes that in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central we can define and assign when creating records, and then use in the process of conducting analysis. With dimensions, the records created in the system can be categorized and tracked.

Until now, only 2 global dimensions could be used as record filters. With the 'Select a dimension filter...' feature in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, these limitations no longer apply to us!

The function is available from all enrollment lists, ie:

  • General ledger entries,
  • Supplier Book Records,
  • Records of the book of buyers,
  • Stock Book Records.

Once in the enrollment list, the function can be found on the ribbon:

After calling it up in the editing window, the user specifies the filtering criteria - selects dimensions and their values from the list.

Then, after approving the window on the list of records, information about which dimension values were used in the filter appears. In addition, below we can see that a filter has been applied to the records with the identifiers of the dimension sets, which contain all 3 dimensions with the values defined in the filter:

'Select dimension filter...' is an easy-to-use feature that makes it easy to filter and review records.

It gives us the ability to filter by all dimensions defined in the system, without being limited to only two global dimensions.

In addition, the list, filtered in this way, can be saved as a new view by default, to which we will have permanent access, thus eliminating the need to define the same set of filters each time. This feature greatly simplifies the inspection of records by dimensions and can be the first step to further and more complex analyses.
